Industry: Mining

datarock.com.au

The Datarock platform was created to address the well-known issues with manual logging through the use of machine learning (computer vision) to analyse imagery of drill core. Datarock’s software and technology allows mining companies to augment and automate core logging practices and generate geological and geotechnical at a scale, speed and transparency which is not possible using traditional methods.

MAXIMISING THE VALUE OF GEOSCIENCE DATA WITH DATAROCK

Transitioning to a renewable economy necessitates a paradigm shift in various industries, including mining. Not only must the mining sector meet the increasing demand for metals, but it must also confront the imperative of reducing its own emissions. However, this task is compounded by a myriad of challenges. Exploration success rates are dwindling, existing deposits are becoming deeper and more arduous to mine, and ore grades are declining. Mining companies are collecting more data than ever, but are still struggling to maximize its value to meet increasingly higher demands placed on them.

The Challenge in the Coreshed

The coreshed serves as the birthplace of some important foundational datasets crucial for mining operations. Traditionally, geotechnical, and geological data are manually logged by geologists and geotechnical engineers. A key problem is that these manually logged datasets are commonly plagued by inconsistency, inefficiency, and a lack of audit trail. As a consequence, many manually logged datasets are not utilized by downstream users to make important mining decisions.

Introducing Datarock

Building upon the legacy of two of Australia’s pioneering consultancies Solve Geosolutions and Dius, Datarock was founded in 2018 and has since attracted significant investment from Australian mining technology company IMDEX and grown to over 50 staff across Australia.

Datarock has worked on over 200 data science projects for the world’s largest mining companies and processed more than 20 million metres of drill core imagery. Datarock operates through two primary branches: its Applied Science team and its core imagery processing platform

The Datarock platform

The Datarock platform was created to address the well-known issues with manual logging through the use of machine learning (computer vision) to analyse imagery of drill core. Datarock’s software and technology allows mining companies to augment and automate core logging practices and generate geological and geotechnical at a scale, speed and transparency which is not possible using traditional methods.

Engineered to be cloud-native, scalable, and secure, this platform harnesses the power of computer vision to extract geological and geotechnical insights from standard RGB photos of drill cores. By automating data extraction, the Datarock platform offers unparalleled speed, cost-effectiveness, consistency, and resolution compared to manual methods. Moreover, it enables seamless auditability, ensuring transparency and reliability in decision-making processes.

Applied Science

At the heart of Datarock's innovation is its Applied Science team, a group of consultants deeply embedded within the mining industry, delivering bespoke, data-driven solutions that are focused on increasing ore body knowledge to drive improvements in the way we explore and mine our resources. Their work involves a robust mix of image and data analysis, research, and solution development, ensuring that Datarock's offerings are at the forefront of scientific advancement and perfectly aligned with the practical needs of the mining sector.

Datarock's Mission

Datarock’s mission is to use data to help mining companies explore and extract resources more efficiently by better leveraging geoscience data through the use of state-of-the-art technology. Datarock strives to unearth possibility.
