EPCA: Electrifying the Mining Industry for a Sustainable Future

In the quest for environmental sustainability, the global call for zero emissions has resonated across industries, prompting Australian mining companies to take proactive steps towards reducing their carbon footprint. One significant contributor to carbon emissions on mine sites is diesel-powered mining trucks, which play a pivotal role in transporting ore and waste.

Enter Electric Powered Conversion Australia (EPCA), a pioneering company dedicated to addressing this challenge head-on. EPCA specialises in retrofitting existing diesel-powered mining vehicles, transforming them into Electric Vehicles (EVs), also known as Battery Electric Trucks (BETs). By electrifying mining vehicles, EPCA's clients not only contribute to reducing carbon emissions but also enjoy substantial cost savings from reduced operating and maintenance expenses.

EPCA is retrofitting a 100tonne diesel mining truck to full battery electric (E100 project). This BET will be ready for the electric mine conference in May 2024. Currently EPCA is nearing the completion of this truck having spent many millions of dollars and thousands of engineering and trade hours to bring to life the worlds highest energy density battery electric truck which runs for 8 hours and recharges in 50minutes.

Founder, Clayton Franklin, a proud Wunumara man and Chief Engineer at EPCA, brings over 25 years of expertise to the table. Hailing from Mission Beach, Queensland, Clayton's journey into sustainability began on his family's organic banana farm, where he invented technologies to reduce emissions. With a background in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and a Master of Business Administration, Clayton's expertise spans electrical design, project implementation, and control systems.

Clayton's passion for sustainability led him to spearhead projects such as a 220-tonne Hydrogen-battery hybrid mining truck and the electrification of a D65 Epiroc drill rig. His extensive experience in renewable energy, including solar PV systems, positions him as a leading figure in the transition towards sustainable mining practices.

With Clayton's leadership and EPCA's commitment to innovation, the mining industry is poised to embrace a greener, more sustainable future. Through the electrification of mining vehicles and the integration of clean energy sources, EPCA is driving positive change, one conversion at a time.
